One of the five Nobel Prizes, the Nobel Peace Prize is considered of great importance globally. Every year the Norwegian Nobel Committee gives the award. They award it to the entity who has done work regarding maintenance of peace and fraternity between nations or reducing the violation and the number of conducting peace events. For this year, there were more than 300 nominees which also included Loujain Alhathloul who is a women’s rights activist from Saudi Arabia, Hong Kong pro-democracy movement people, and the Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunberg.
A committee is formed every year and the members are allowed to nominate an entity of their choice. The committee usually includes politicians, state heads, high-level scholars, and University professors. On Friday, the winner was announced and World Food Programme ended up winning the award. The organization is a part of the United Nations and is working to combat hunger all around the World. They are focusing especially on War Zone areas where people die of hunger due to insufficient food and is used as a weapon to create conflict. Promoting food security and addressing food crises across the world WFP is the largest organization to do so.
Why was WFP recognized with the Nobel Peace Prize this year?
The Nobel committee gave their explanation on why they had declared World Food Program as the winner. According to a survey, the most malnourished children are found in countries that are under Warzone where there is a lot of armed conflict going on. The stats show that more than 80% of people who die of hunger are from these areas which creates a link between arm complex and hunger. There are many who are fighting against the use of nuclear weapons for bombing. It is considered as an important step for bringing peace and working towards the well-being of people who are facing the consequences of such attacks.

The committee is focusing on eradicating hunger completely and has a global goal to achieve it till 2025. Hunger is considered to be a man-made disaster which can be overcome if all the beings come together. The WFP provides food to places where there is insufficiency. They also send cash transfers to the volunteers at that place if transportation is expensive or not possible. The WFP has supplied more than 4.2 million metric tons of food and $1.2 billion in cash. They have done so to help 288 countries having more than 100 million people. In 2015, the United Nations included the WFP in the primary committee of its sustainable development goals. They are also working on sanitation, poverty, gender equality, and more.
