On 21st August, 2020 ‘The One and Only Ivan’ was released on Disney Plus Original, and the movie has received a lot of amazing reviews. Directed by Thea Sharrock, the movie is adapted from the children’s novel with the same name by Katherina Alice Applegate, better known as K.A. Applegate. The announcement for the film was made in 2014 but the filming started in 2018. The movie was originally intended to be a theatrical release but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was not possible. They could not delay the release date further. Everyone around the world is staying indoors and many countries are still under lockdown. People have lost their freedom and are not able to do what they want. The same is applicable for the animals in the zoo who have been caged for years.
What is the movie about?
The story of the movie is about Ivan, the majestic silverback Gorilla who is looking for a little freedom wanting to get out of his cage and the zoo. Ivan works at a circus-themed Mall and is the main attraction of the big top mall. Mac, who is the owner of the zoo was kind-hearted and takes care of all the animals and also performs with them. Mack and his daughter Julia take care of the animals. There is also Stella the elephant who is friends with Ivan.
Ivan performs a daily show where he is asked to scare the kids and entertain them. One fine day, Julia after playing with Ivan leaves her crayon set and Ivan suddenly begins to draw. Only Julia can decipher what those drawings mean. During this time, Mac gets Ruby an African baby elephant and Stella acts as her adopted mother. Ruby changes the dynamics of the show and becomes a star. Ruby’s arrival and her stories ignited a spark of freedom in the other animals. Now, the question that remains is will the animals earn their freedom or continue to work in the zoo. To know more, you will have to watch the movie.
The 86-minute delightful experience is for all the age groups. Every Disney movie teaches something and portrays a new topic such as Ruby losing her parents, Mac showing Ape man’s behavior where he does not mistreat the animals but uses them for his own benefit, Stella explaining Ivan how humans expect certain behavior from an animal when Ivan asks why people want an angry Gorilla. The director wanted the audience to experience something different. The movie is inspired by a true story.
Ivan, a Gorilla was caged for 27 years before Zoo Atalanta made a decision to adopt him in 1994. Humans have forgotten that animals have feelings too. The movie is released so that now humans can empathize living in lockdown where even getting out to get fresh air is difficult. The film motivates people to fight for animal rights and not use them for self-entertainment.
