Written by Audrey Wells, the animated musical drama ‘Over the Moon’ released a few days back. The movie has received some mixed reviews from the audience. When it comes to the combination of Disney and Pixar, they have created some amazing projects in the past. If you cannot watch it on an IMAX screen, it is not that fun. The movie is a tribute in the memory of Wells who passed away in 2018 due to cancer and this is her last project. She has also worked on some projects such as ‘A Dog’s Purpose’, ‘The Hate U Give’, ‘The Game Plan’ and more. The movie was released on 23rd October on Netflix and also in some selected theatres.
What is the movie ‘Over the Moon’ about?
The plot revolves around Fei Fei and her family. During a Moon Festival, her mother gets sick and dies. She gifts a bunny to Fei Fei before dying as a gift. The Moon Festival is celebrated by the Chinese as they worship the moon for all the harvest they did that year. Four years later, her father starts dating which annoys Fei Fei. She believes in a theory that the Moon Goddess exists who is immortal. The Goddess waits for her lover on the Moon believing you can only love one person truly.
If Fei Fei can prove the eternal love concept, her father will have to dump his new girlfriend only dedicating himself to Fei Fei’s mother. For this, she starts building a spaceship so that she can go to the moon and prove the Goddess really exists. Unfortunately, during the way her rocket crashes and a whole new adventure is unlocked. Turns out the Goddess is real and teaches her about letting things go. The main motive of the movie is to explain how to handle losses and pain.

Everything you need to know about the computer-animated musical drama:
Starring Cathy Ang, Phillipa Soo, Ken Jeong, John Cho, Ruthie Ann Miles, Margaret Cho, and Sandra Oh as voiceovers, the movie also has amazing musicals. Receiving an average rating of 6.7/10 it is a fun experience for kids to watch. The deeper you understand the movie resonates with young children losing their parents and how it starts affecting their psych and the family dynamic. Fei Fei clinging onto her mother’s memory and not expressing the grief is explained by Chang’e. The Goddess is not someone Fei imagined it to be but rather comes out as a villain in her life.
The symbolism and animation are truly amazing. Although the movie does not come out as the best, it surely shares a heart-warming story. It’s about love, family, and grief of losing your loved ones. In 2017, the project was announced trying to tell the story of the Chinese myth. Sony Pictures Imageworks does the animation and Netflix bought the distribution rights. The movie lacks in some parts but is truly worth the watch. It is available for streaming on Netflix.
