Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom: The Trailer
“I’ve got my time coming to me”, Boseman remarks in the trailer; And that’s what every Boseman fan will notice first while seeing the trailer. Set in the 1980s, Chicago, the trailer opens in a recording studio, where we can see Viola Davis looking fabulous while playing with her mic. We also see her team and bandmates who are practicing with her as well. The recording session seems a fun environment, consisting of people in their late 50s. And a minute later, enters Chadwick Boseman, an arrogant yet charming young man, playing trumpets. He looks ambitious who is trying to achieve his goals by hook or crook.
Boseman stands out from others in the band and does not hesitate to speak against Davis’s ways of playing music. He speaks harsh truth whether it’s about music or life. The frenemy kind of relationship between Davis and Boseman looks fun to watch.
Besides the little arguments between the leads of the movie, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom will also focus on the exploitation of Black artists. Ma Rainey (Viola Davis) and Levee (Chadwick Boseman) will be continuously fighting for their rights as artists. The duo will also be seen fulfilling their duties as artists and have a stable career.
The movie consists of an all-black cast and is based on a play by August Wilson. It is one of the ten plays in the Pittsburgh Cycle by Wilson. The play depicts the experience of African-American artists in the 20th century.
