South Texas has long been a hotbed of mariachi activity, and the University of Texas-Pan Am at Edinburgh has produced more than its share of award-winning mariachi ensembles over the years. UTPA’s FESTIBA Mariachi Workshop, Vocal Competition, and Concert — celebrated as part the international FESTIBA Festival of Books and Arts — has a particularly impressive lineup this year. Distinguished clinicians include brothers Fernando de Santiago (vihuela) and Marco de Santiago (guitarrón), founding directors of Mariachi Juvenil Tecalitlán; Adolfo Estrada (guitar) of Mariachi Los Galleros de San Antonio; Alex “Mantecas” González (trumpet), director of Mariachi Tepalcatepec de Michoacán; Miguel Guzmán (violin) of Mariachi Los Camperos de Nati Cano; César Jáuregui (trumpet) of Mariachi Los Caporales; Laura Sobrino (violin), musical director of Mariachi Mujer 2000; and former Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán member Manuel Vargas (violin and voice), currently director of Mariachi Sangre Mexicana.
Friday, March 26 activities include workshops, master classes, lectures, panel discussions, and a vocal competition. Saturday, March 27 activities commence with more vocal competitions and conclude with a concert featuring the legendary Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán, competition winners, and others.
Don’t miss it!
